Deputy Chief of Mission

Tom Pierce was assigned to Georgetown, Guyana in August 2010 and served as the Chargé d’Affaires, a.i., until September 2011 when he assumed the position of Deputy Chief of Mission, with the arrival of the Ambassador.  

Prior to this assignment, Mr. Pierce served as the Deputy Director for the Office of Economic Policy and Summit Coordination, in the Bureau of Western Hemisphere Affairs at the Department of State.  During that assignment, he was the Deputy National Summit Coordinator for the Summit of the Americas and represented the United States in many of the negotiating sessions for the 2009 Declaration of Port of Spain.  From 2006 to 2008, he was a Special Assistant to the Under Secretary of Economic, Energy and Agricultural Affairs, working on a broad range of economic issues and providing policy advice during the tenure of two Under Secretaries.  Other Washington assignments include the Panama and Nicaragua Desks, and in the Bureau of Economic, Energy and Business Affairs.  

From 2002 to 2004, he served as Chief of the Economic Unit at the U.S. Embassy in Santo Domingo, Dominican Republic, where he received the title of Caballero when awarded the Presidential Duarte, Sanchez, Mella Order of Merit for his work on the United States-Dominican Republic Free Trade Agreement.  He previously served as an economic officer in Amman, Jordan, and has had consular postings, in Melbourne, Australia and Guayaquil, Ecuador.  

Mr. Pierce has received numerous U.S. Department of State awards, including both group and individual Meritorious Honor and Superior Honor awards.  He has an MBA from Portland State University in Oregon, and a degree in business from Columbia Christian College.
