List of Hospitals and Physicians in Guyana

Local Health Specialists

The Health Unit has compiled the following list of health care providers. Practitioners are included after review by the Regional Medical Officer or Nurse Practitioner. The majority has been trained overseas, are familiar with American medical care, and have a reasonable command of English.

The list is not meant to be exhaustive or definitive nor does it represent either a guarantee of competence or endorsement by the Department of State or the United States Embassy. It does indicate that the U.S. community has utilized them in the past. Retention on this list depends upon a combination of factors including availability, training, and positive assistance in previous consultations, etc. Patient input, both positive and negative, regarding experience with local health care providers, is always welcome and provides additional information to assist in expanding or contracting this list.

Physician’s fees can run to the equivalent of U.S.$200.00 or more.

Local Health Facilities

ST. JOSEPH’S MERCY HOSPITAL (Tel: 227-2072/5)
This hospital is located virtually next door to the Embassy at 130 Parade St., Kingston.  It has one hundred and twenty-four beds (124) beds. There is a 24-hour emergency room (ER) staffed by Physician and Registered Nurse.  Specialists are available on call from their homes. The Intensive Care Unit (ICU) has capability of four beds and has very basic equipment.  The hospital offers Medical, Surgical and Obstetric care including diagnostic Ultrasonography.

A private self-contained room with air-conditioner, presently costs approximately USD$100.00 daily.  Exchange USD 1= GD 203.00

This is the most suitable hospital for Embassy Personnel.

PUBLIC HOSPITAL GEORGETOWN (PHG) (Tel: 227-8232/8204-9)
This is the largest hospital in Georgetown, and is being rehabilitated. The hospital has a capacity of 600 beds but currently operates 400 beds, mainly due to a shortage of trained medical personnel. The fairly new Ambulatory Care and Diagnostic Center is well equipped and houses a new Accident and Emergency Department.  There is a 4-suite Operating Room and a 2-suite minor surgery rooms.  There is also an 8-bed Intensive Care Unit (ICU) with state-of-the-art equipment.

This is an extremely busy hospital and the present system does not allow for private patients to access the services except for the emergency room and intensive care unit (ER/ICU).

DAVIS MEMORIAL HOSPITAL (Tel: 227-2041-3)
This is a small hospital, which offers general medical/surgical services with specialties in Gynecology and Orthopedics. The embassy utilizes selected outpatient clinics.

PRASAD’S HOSPITAL (Tel: 226-7210/9; 3225)
This hospital is situated at 260 Thomas and Middle St. and has 72 beds.  It offers a 24-hour Emergency Service, Intensive care Unit and other outpatient services. Selected outpatient services are sometimes used.

WOODLANDS HOSPTIAL (Tel: 227-0355; 226-2024; 225-5450)
This hospital is situated at 110-111 Carmichael Street. The main operating theater and recovery room facilities have been recently upgraded.  Medical, Surgical and Dental consultants operate specialty outpatient clinics to which patients are referred.  CT scan and ultrasound services are available. 

MEDICAL ARTS CENTER (Tel: 225-7402)
This is a small hospital is situated at 265 Thomas St., North Cummingsburg. Specialty outpatient services may be used.
