U.S. Embassy donates books to local institutions-seeks to broaden academic horizons of Guyana's children

On Tuesday, September 15, 2009, U.S. Embassy Political Officer Richard Bakewell handed over a quantity of Scholastic Book sets to four schools in Linden – the McKenzie and Wismar Hill Primary and Linden Foundation and Wismar/Christianburg Secondary.  The book donation coincided with a $10,000USD sports equipment presentation to the same four schools, made during the Embassy’s Humanitarian Assistance Program Sports Day.

Other institutions that benefitted from the Book donation program in the past include the National (Branch) Library, Essequibo; King School, Linden/Soesdyke Highway, and the Berbice High School, New Amsterdam.

Books are donated under the Embassy’s Book Donation program: a mix of age-appropriate fiction and non-fiction texts spanning a wide range of subjects, intended to broaden the academic horizons of the children who read them.  Through this program, the Embassy periodically makes such donations to schools and welcomes requests from any school administrator who would like to benefit from the initiative.  Administrators may contact the Embassy’s Public Affairs office.
