Chargé d'Affaires visits Tropical Medicine Clinic

Thursday, August 20 – U.S. Chargé d'Affaires Karen Williams, accompanied by Military Liaison Officer, LTC Melba Hernandez, visited the Mahdia District Hospital where a medical team from the US Military Tropical Medicine Course was providing free medical services to residents of Mahdia and its surrounding areas.  The team of 12 doctors, comprised of a dermatologist, pediatricians, general medical practitioners and a microbiologist, saw and treated more than 200 people.  Local nurses and health workers from the region provided valuable assistance to the visiting team.   Mahdia has about 900 permanent residents.

Chairman of the Region, Senor Belle, and Regional Executive Officer, Ishwar Dass, highly praised the team for its work and expressed  hope that their services would be extended to the North Pakaraimas area, where some 7000 people have no access to professional health care.

Ms. Williams distributed dental kits to children and residents from the area.  Team leader and Director of the U.S. Military Tropical Medicine Course, Lieutenant Commander David Brett-Major, presented plaques to the Embassy officials and the Regional officials in recognition of the partnerships between the various agencies.
