U.S.-Sponsored Female Substance Abuse Program launched

U.S. Embassy Political/Public Affairs Officer Rolf Olson helped inaugurate the first ever female drug treatment program in Guyana.  The treatment program is a collaborative effort between the U.S. Department of State, U.S.-based NGO Catholic Relief Services (CRS), and local substance abuse treatment provider the Phoenix Recovery Project; it was developed with US$100,000 in funding from the Department of State and $30,000 from CRS.  The program includes a residential treatment facility for up to twelve women, which will be the first such rehabilitative facility specifically for women in Guyana.

Delivering the feature address at the launch ceremony, Olson noted that “substance abuse affects individuals, communities, and indeed entire countries.” He expressed the hope that this contribution from the American people “will make a real difference.”
